OCR: SETI THE SEARCH FOR LIFE (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) METEORITES THE SETI PROGRAM Sightings of UFOs and so-called "flying saucers" raise an essential question: Is there intelligent life in the Universe beyond Earth? One way of trying to answer this is by listening to signals from space. In 1960, Frank D. Drake, a young American astrophysicist, built a special radio telescope equipped with a receiver and aimed it at two nearby stars, Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani. Camille Flammarion had noted the peculiar Tau Ceti in 1882, when he wrote: "The 'whale star,' Tau Ceti, is remarkable for its speed. It moves as if it were in league with us, but traveling faster, across the immensity of the Universe. Perhaps the fates of the populations inhabiting the planetary system around this sun are linked to ours for eternity." After a few weeks, Drake's receiver picked up a strong signal, which he thought was generated near Epsilon Eridani. But verification showed that the radio signal came from American U-2 spy planes flying over the Soviet territory at an altitude of 20,000 meters. Nonetheless, Drake had shown that his special radio telescope could be used to detect artificial radio signals from the stratosphere. MARS BETAT
